Economic and Environmental Sustainability of
Electric Vehicle Systems Reference: MIT/MCA/0066/2009 Project Objectives The proposed project is an
economic and environmental sustainability assessment of electric vehicle
systems. There are three main questions: - What are the conditions under which
the electric vehicle system produces a net environmental benefit relative to
existing vehicle systems? - What are the conditions under which
the electric vehicle system is economically competitive with existing vehicle
systems? - What is the uncertainty associated with
these conditions and how can knowledge of that uncertainty be leveraged in
strategic decisions around the development of electric vehicle systems? These questions will be
explored using a research plan that is organized into the three elements: 1. Economic and environmental analysis
of electric vehicles 2. Economic and environmental analysis
of power generation, and 3. Synthesis and decision analysis. The proposed research
topic is directly related to the “Materials and Design-Inspired Products”
area of the FCT call, particularly the “Sustainability Issues” element of the
“Systems and Components for Electric Vehicles” topic. The research
exemplifies the engineering systems approach by using engineering, social
science, and management tools to analyze a large-scale complex problem.
Indeed, the engineering systems methodology employed in this research sets it
apart from existing research on electric vehicles that is often limited in
scope. The assembled team of multidisciplinary researchers is well positioned
to conduct this type of research; a diverse team is necessary to tackle such
