Research & Projects

Applied research and technology transfer from academy to industry can be successfully integrated. I believe that in a near future the evolution in intuitive and safe human-robot interfaces conjugated with robot cognition and safety strategies will change the way humans interact with machines. Robots will be our co-workers.

Research Interests: Human-robot interaction (HRI) and collaborative robotics are large research fields that cover different technologies and application domains (my focus is on industry domain). Intuitive HRI is a fundamental competence for the advance of robotics. My research is dedicated to HRI using gestures. It includes sensor fusion, data segmentation, interaction synergies, machine learning techniques for pattern classification (artificial neural networks, recurrent neural networks and deep learning), cognitive and physical HRI, robot dynamics, collision avoidance, and robot safety. To have an effective collaborative robot the robot needs to have autonomy to decide. This means that the robot needs to know what is in its surrounding. My research also focuses in object segmentation, feature definition and classification from RGB-D images. In addition, I’m also working in advanced robot applications, namely robotic friction stir welding and manufacturing assembly.
