Prize awarded by the prestigious IAEE to a CIE-UC researcher
Yvonne Vogt Gwerder, MSc candidate at EfS-UC and researcher at CIE-UC, won the 3rd prize awarded by the prestigious IAEE (International Association for Energy Economics) during the last edition of the Portuguese Association for Energy Economics Conference, held in Braga on October 19, 2018.
The work is entitled "To what extent do regulatory and market influence affect smart grid investment in Europe?” and was co-authored with Nuno Figueiredo and Patrícia Pereira da Silva.

Fausto Freire participated in the Simpósio Luso Brasileiro de Ecologia Industrial e Gestão do Ciclo de Vida, in Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil, in 23-24 January 2018, and presented “The activities of the Center for Industrial Ecology at the University of Coimbra”. He then attended the SDEWES - 1st Latin American Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 28-31 January 2018, where he presented the paper “Life-Cycle Sustainability Assessment of Key Electricity Generation Systems in Portugal" (co-authored by Jeremiah Kabayo and Pedro Marques).

George E Davis Medal awarded to Prof. Roland Clift
The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has announced that Professor Roland Clift CBE is the recipient of the 12th George E Davis Medal, the highest award conferred by the Institution. The award recognizes his contributions to both theory and practice in engineering of particle-fluid systems and in engineering for sustainability. The medal presentation will take place on Thursday 6 July 2017 following the 12th George E. Davis Lecture entitled “Seeing the Whole Picture: chemical engineering and the science of sustainability”. The event will be at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London. Professor Roland Clift has been several times at the University of Coimbra, as a visiting professor to the EfS Initiative and the Centre for Industrial Ecology.

Helena Monteiro, SES doctoral candidate at University of Coimbra, under the MIT Portugal Program, successfully presented her PhD thesis entitled “Comprehensive life cycle assessment of new houses in Portugal: Building design, envelope, and operational conditions” on 3rd May 2017, 14:30, at Sala dos Capelos, University of Coimbra.
The University of Coimbra participated in the I Agrifood Innovation Fair (I9AGRI), held at Castelo Branco from 4 to 6 April 2017. CIE was one of the research groups represented.

Ronaldo Costa successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled “Quantificação das emissões de GEE para veículos de coleta de resíduos domiciliares abastecidos com GNV e diesel-B5 utilizando ACV”, supervised by Prof. Dr. Carlos Santos (Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul - PUCRS) and co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Marcus Seferin (PUCRS) and Prof. Dr. Fausto Freire (UC), on November 30, at PUCRS. Ronaldo Costa did part of the PhD Sandwich Internship at CIE-UC from September 2013 to August 2014.

The kick-off meeting of the H2020 project UrbanWINS was held at Cremona, Italy, on July 7-8. Fausto Freire participated in the meeting as coordinator of the University of Coimbra team.
The Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) and the National Entity for Fuel Market (ENMC) signed a protocol of cooperation, on June 28. The protocol aims to exchange experiences and scientific and technical knowledge in biofuels. In the scope of this protocol, ENMC and FCTUC organized the workshop “Desenvolvimento de Biocombustíveis mais Sustentáveis”, to present the new European Directive 2015/1513 on Sustainable Biofuels and gather feedback from stakeholders regarding its implementation in Portugal.
Fausto Freire was invited to be a member of the external advisory committee of the BioEcon project “New Strategies on Bio-Economy in Poland”. He participated in the “Bioeconomy in Agriculture” conference organized in the scope of the project, held in Pulawy (Poland), 21-22 June.

Prof. Roland Clift, Emeritus Professor of Environmental Technology, University of Surrey, UK, visited the University of Coimbra (UC) in November as invited Professor of the Energy for Sustainability (EfS) Initiative (http://www.uc.pt/efs). Prof. Clift gave inaugural lecture of the EfS Doctoral and Master programs, entitled “Carbon Footprinting, Concepts, Approaches and Problems”, on November 6, at the Auditorium of the Mechanical Engineering Department (DEM-UC) in the Polo II campus, and gave a follow-up talk on November 18. During his visit, he collaborated on several research projects from the Center for Industrial Ecology.
Diana Rosa, researcher at the Center for Industrial Ecology (CIE) of the University of Coimbra was awarded with the "Science Technology Transfer” award during the IN-TECH 2015 conference (International Conference on Innovative Technologies) held from September 9 to 13 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, for the presentation of the paper "An ecodesign tool for automobile plastic components: framework and application", coauthored by Diana Rosa, Joana Gouveia, João Malça and Fausto Freire (University of Coimbra, Portugal) and Pedro Silva, Cláudia Esteves and Gonçalo Tomé (company CIE-Plasfil - Plásticos da Figueira SA, Figueira da Foz, Portugal). This research was part of a joint research project entitled “EcoDesign and Impact Labelling” financed by QREN / SI I&DT: Projetos Individuais (FCOMP–01–0202–FEDER–038485), that aimed to develop and implement an ecodesign tool (“EcoPlasfil”) for automobile plastic components manufactured by CIE-Plasfil to reduce the environmental life-cycle impacts of automobiles. The EcoDesign tool developed in this project allows the systematic integration of environmental aspects in the technical and technological development of products, resulting in competitive advantages for CIE-Plasfil in an increasingly competitive market.
Érica Castanheira, post-doctoral researcher at the Center for Industrial Ecology of the University of Coimbra, was awarded with the best presentation award during the VI International Conference on Life Cycle Assessment in Latin America conference (CILCA 2015), for the presentation of the paper "Environmental Life-Cycle Assessment of soybean biodiesel in Portugal: import grain, oil or biodiesel from Brazil?", coauthored by Erica Castanheira and Fausto Freire (University of Coimbra, Portugal) as well as Renata Grisoli, Suani Coelho and Gil Anderi da Silva (University of São Paulo, Brazil).
The 2nd Discussion Forum on Industrial Ecology took place at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Coimbra on 5-6 March 2015, with more than 40 participants from six different countries (Portugal, Brazil, France, Spain, UK, and USA). There were two plenary sessions by Prof. Roland Clift on “Life cycle sustainability assessment: extending the scope of LCA” and Prof. Paulo Ferrão on “Urban Metabolism”, and 20 presentations on topics such as bioenergy, urban systems, forest and agro-industrial systems, and methodological advances. The Forum was organized by the Center for Industrial Ecology at the University of Coimbra.
Amir Safaei, SES PhD student at University of Coimbra, under the MIT Portugal Program, successfully discussed his thesis entitled “Life-cycle optimization model for distributed generation in buildings” on November, 10th, at Sala dos Capelos, Universidade de Coimbra.

Rita Garcia visited the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, from June to end of August 2014, to work with Prof. Jeremy Gregory at the Materials Systems Laboratory. She developed research on dynamic fleet-based life-cycle assessment incorporating uncertainty.
Prof. Fausto Freire participated in the Gordon Research Conference on Industrial Ecology 2014 - Transforming the Industrial Metabolism, June 1-6, Lucca (Barga), Italy.
Carla Caldeira was invited by Prof. Stelios Rozakis for a three months internship at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development of the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece). Carla stayed at the University of Athens from April to the end of June developing research on optimization of biodiesel systems.
The 4th MIT Portugal Program Conference - New Frontiers for a Sustainable Prosperity- took place in Coimbra, June 27th, 2014. The PhD candidates of MIT Portugal Program from CIE present their research there.
Érica Geraldes Castanheira, SES PhD student at University of Coimbra, under the MIT Portugal Program, successfully discussed her thesis “Environmental Sustainability Assessment of Soybean and Palm Biodiesel Systems: A Life-Cycle Approach” on June, 26th at the University of Coimbra (Sala dos Capelos).

Érica Castanheira visited the Brazilian Reference Center on Biomass (CENBIO) at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) in the scope of the FCT/CAPES Project “Life Cycle Environmental Sustainability Assessment of Bioenergy” and gave a talk in the Workshop “Recentes pesquisas em Bioenergia e Biocombustíveis – Brasil – Portugal” (14 March 2014): “Avaliação de ciclo de vida de biodiesel produzido em Portugal a partir de óleo de palma e soja importados da América Latina”.

The poster H. Monteiro, F. Freire, J Fernandez (2012) “Extended life cycle assessment of Low-energy houses in the Mediterranean context” presented at the 3rd MIT Portugal Conference, Guimarães, May 28-29 2012, was selected as one of the best six posters. This granted a pitch presentation by Helena Monteiro in the Session “Focus on Leaders- Students’ Pitch” that was awarded as the 3rd best presentation (with a FNAC card).
Érica Castanheira visited CENBIO, University of São Paulo, Brazil, in the scope of the BIOACV Project, in May-June 2012. During her visit, Érica Castanheira participated as a speaker in the 4º. Seminário Bioenergia do CENBIO: Desafios e Oportunidades de Negócios.

Profs. Gil Anderi da Silva and Luiz Kulay from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, have visited the University of Coimbra for meetings at the CIE. Prof. Luiz Kulay gave the talk: "Life-Cycle Management em empresas Brasileiras: A experiência do Grupo de Prevenção da Poluição da Universidade de São Paulo" on December 5, at DEM-FCTUC Pólo II.
João Malça has defended his PhD thesis with distinction and honors in Mechanical Engineering on November 3 2011. The thesis is entitled “Incorporating uncertainty in the life-cycle modeling of biofuels: energy renewability and GHG intensity of biodiesel and bioethanol in Europe” and was supervised by Prof. Fausto Freire.
Prof. Randy Kirchain, from the MIT, has given a talk on “Leveraging uncertainty to realize sustainable engineering systems: Case studies across three industries”, on November 3rd, at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UC.
Érica Castanheira and Fausto Freire have been awarded two “Santander Totta” grants to visit CENBIO at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2011, to work on research concerning the assessment of biofuel sustainability.
