awarded by the prestigious IAEE (International Association for Energy
Economics) during the last edition of the Portuguese Association for Energy

effectiveness and manage environmental impacts. George E Davis Medal awarded to Prof. Roland Clift The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE)
has announced that Professor Roland Clift CBE is the recipient of the 12th
George E Davis Medal, the highest award conferred by the Institution. The
award recognizes his contributions to both theory and practice in engineering
of particle-fluid systems and in engineering for sustainability. The medal
presentation will take place on Thursday 6 July 2017 following the 12th
George E. Davis Lecture entitled “Seeing the Whole Picture: chemical
engineering and the science of sustainability”. The event will be at the
Royal Academy of Engineering in London. Professor Roland Clift has been
several times at the University of Coimbra, as a visiting professor to the EfS Initiative and the Centre for Industrial Ecology. On 11 April, Fausto Freire and Érica Castanheira from CIE
visited "Soja de Portugal", namely the
units of valorization of sub-products from the food industry Helena Monteiro, SES doctoral candidate at University of Coimbra, under
the MIT Portugal Program, successfully presented her PhD thesis entitled
“Comprehensive life cycle assessment of new houses in Portugal: Building
design, envelope, and operational conditions” on 3rd May 2017, 14:30, at Sala
dos Capelos, University of Coimbra. The University of Coimbra participated in the I Agrifood

of the University of Coimbra team. The Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra
(FCTUC) and the National Entity for Fuel Market (ENMC) signed a protocol of cooperation,
on June 28. The protocol aims to exchange experiences and scientific and
technical knowledge in biofuels. In the scope of this protocol, ENMC and
FCTUC organized the workshop “Desenvolvimento de Biocombustíveis mais Sustentáveis”, to present the new European Directive
2015/1513 on Sustainable Biofuels and gather feedback from stakeholders

(DEM-UC) in the Polo II campus, and gave a follow-up talk on November 18.
During his visit, he collaborated on several research projects from the
Center for Industrial Ecology. Diana Rosa, researcher at the Center for Industrial Ecology (CIE) of
the University of Coimbra was awarded with the "Science Technology
Transfer” award during the IN-TECH 2015 conference (International Conference
on Innovative Technologies) held from September 9 to 13 in Dubrovnik,
Croatia, for the presentation of the paper "An ecodesign
tool for automobile plastic components: framework and application",
coauthored by Diana Rosa, Joana Gouveia, João Malça and Fausto Freire (University of Coimbra, Portugal) and Pedro
Silva, Cláudia Esteves
and Gonçalo Tomé (company CIE-Plasfil

Portugal). This research was part of
a joint research project entitled “EcoDesign and
Impact Labelling” financed by QREN / SI I&DT: Projetos
Individuais (FCOMP–01–0202–FEDER–038485), that
aimed to develop and implement an ecodesign tool (“EcoPlasfil”) for automobile plastic components
manufactured by CIE-Plasfil to reduce the
environmental life-cycle impacts of automobiles. The EcoDesign
tool developed in this project allows the systematic integration of
environmental aspects in the technical and technological development of
products, resulting in competitive advantages for CIE-Plasfil
in an increasingly competitive market. Érica Castanheira, post-doctoral researcher at the
Center for Industrial Ecology of the University of Coimbra, was awarded with
the best presentation award during the VI International Conference on Life
Cycle Assessment in Latin America conference (CILCA 2015), for the
presentation of the paper "Environmental Life-Cycle Assessment of
soybean biodiesel in Portugal: import grain, oil or biodiesel from
Brazil?", coauthored by Erica Castanheira and Fausto Freire (University of Coimbra, Portugal) as well
as Renata Grisoli, Suani
Coelho and Gil Anderi da Silva (University of São
Paulo, Brazil). The 2nd Discussion Forum on Industrial Ecology took place at
the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Coimbra on 5-6
March 2015, with more than 40 participants from six different countries
(Portugal, Brazil, France, Spain, UK, and USA). There were two plenary
sessions by Prof. Roland Clift on “Life cycle sustainability assessment:
extending the scope of LCA” and Prof. Paulo Ferrão
on “Urban Metabolism”, and 20 presentations on topics such as bioenergy,
urban systems, forest and agro-industrial systems, and methodological
advances. The Forum was organized by the Center for
Industrial Ecology at the University of Coimbra. Amir Safaei, SES PhD student at University of

fleet-based life-cycle assessment incorporating uncertainty. Prof. Fausto Freire participated in the
Gordon Research Conference on Industrial Ecology 2014 - Transforming the Industrial
Metabolism, June 1-6, Lucca (Barga), Italy. Carla Caldeira was invited by Prof. Stelios Rozakis for a three
months internship at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural
Development of the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece). Carla stayed
at the University of Athens from April to the end of June developing research
on optimization of biodiesel systems. The 4th MIT Portugal Program Conference - New Frontiers for a

has defended his PhD thesis with distinction and honors in Mechanical
Engineering on November 3 2011. The thesis is entitled “Incorporating
uncertainty in the life-cycle modeling of biofuels: energy renewability and
GHG intensity of biodiesel and bioethanol in Europe” and was supervised by
Prof. Fausto Freire. Prof. Randy Kirchain, from
the MIT, has given a talk on “Leveraging uncertainty to realize sustainable
engineering systems: Case studies across three industries”, on November 3rd,
at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UC.
Érica Castanheira and
Fausto Freire have been awarded two “Santander Totta” grants to visit CENBIO at the University of São
Paulo, Brazil, in 2011, to work on research concerning the assessment
of biofuel sustainability.
